Staying safe

Indonesia sits on several active plate boundaries, so earthquakes are frequent. For warnings, rely on BMKG's official channels (the InaTEWS tsunami warning system, its website and its app) and on the local disaster management agency (BPBD). If you are near the coast and feel a strong or long earthquake, move to higher ground without waiting for an official warning.

Reading the numbers

Magnitude measures the energy released; each whole step is about 32 times more energy. Depth matters as much: shallow earthquakes (under 60 km) are felt more strongly at the surface than deeper ones of the same magnitude. The Modified Mercalli scale (I to XII) describes how strongly a quake was felt at a place: at III it is felt indoors like a passing truck, at V it can break dishes and windows, and from VI buildings can be damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official warning service?

No. It summarises BMKG data for reading; warnings come only from BMKG and the local authorities.

How quickly is a new earthquake shown?

We check BMKG every few minutes, and this page is rebuilt on our next publishing cycle, so allow up to about half an hour.

Why only magnitude 5.0 and above?

This list uses BMKG's feed of recent strong earthquakes. BMKG's own site also lists smaller, felt earthquakes.
