The five daily prayers

Muslims pray five times a day: Fajr (called Subuh in Indonesia) at dawn, Dhuhr (Dzuhur) after midday, Asr (Ashar) in the afternoon, Maghrib just after sunset and Isha (Isya) at nightfall. The times move with the sun through the year, by a minute or two a week. Sunrise marks the end of the time for the dawn prayer. Imsak, ten minutes before Fajr, is the Indonesian convention for when to stop eating before a day of fasting.

Three time zones

Indonesia has three time zones: Western Indonesia Time (WIB, UTC+7) for Sumatra, Java and western and central Kalimantan; Central Indonesia Time (WITA, UTC+8) for Bali, Nusa Tenggara, southern, eastern and northern Kalimantan and Sulawesi; and Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT, UTC+9) for Maluku and Papua. The table gives each city's local time, so Denpasar, Makassar and Balikpapan are in WITA.

Prayer times and daily life

Most Indonesians are Muslim, and the call to prayer (adhan) is heard from mosques across most of the country five times a day. On Fridays, Muslim men attend the midday congregational prayer (Jumatan) in place of Dhuhr, so offices and some shops take a longer break around midday. During Ramadan people stop eating at imsak, fast from dawn until Maghrib and then break the fast together; expect busy roads and restaurants just before sunset.

How accurate are these times?

The times are calculated from the position of the sun for the centre of each city. Elsewhere in the same area they can differ by a few minutes, and local mosques often add a few minutes of precaution (ihtiyat). For worship, follow the schedule of your local mosque or the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Frequently asked questions

What is imsak?

Imsak is the time to stop eating and drinking before a day of fasting, set in Indonesia at about ten minutes before the dawn prayer (Fajr). It matters mostly during Ramadan.

Why does my local mosque show a different time?

Mosques use the official schedule for their own location and often add a few minutes of precaution (ihtiyat). A difference of a few minutes is normal; follow your mosque.

Which time zone are Bali and Makassar in?

Central Indonesia Time (WITA, UTC+8), one hour ahead of Jakarta. The times in the table are local times.

How often is this page updated?

The schedule for the month is refreshed twice a day, and the page is rebuilt several times an hour, so it moves to the new day shortly after midnight.
